Activists and leaders of the legally banned political organization, the Awami League, executed a flash procession in Shariatpur on Saturday afternoon. The cohort marched along the strategic Dhaka-Shariatpur Highway in the Premtala area under Shariatpur Municipality, brandishing party banners and the national flag. Video footage of the unsanctioned demonstration rapidly circulated across social media platforms, prompting regional security agencies to initiate a high-level review of the geopolitical breach.
According to visual intelligence from the viral broadcast, the illegal rally was directly spearheaded by Selim Sheikh, an elected local government representative serving as a member of Ward 1 of Palong Union Parishad under Shariatpur Sadar. In an assertive defiance of the federal ban, Sheikh live-streamed the entire demonstration from his verified Facebook page. The marchers chanted slogans demanding the repatriation of exiled leader Sheikh Hasina, alongside the immediate rescission of the statutory ban imposed on the organization and its auxiliary wings.
This flash demonstration marks a escalating pattern, with the dissolved ruling party and its affiliates staging recurrent underground rallies across Shariatpur over the past fortnight. Earlier on Monday, the volunteer wing, Swechchhasebak League, held a synchronized march on the district town’s main artery, following prior interventions by the outlawed student unit, Chhatra League. While Union Parishad Member Selim Sheikh immediately absconded and remained unreachable for comment, an anonymous regional youth wing leader affirmed that the cell intends to sustain these hit-and-run tactics to protest ongoing litigation.
Responding to the volatile security development, Shah Alam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Palong Model Sub-district Police Station, stated that law enforcement had no prior intelligence regarding the prohibited assembly. The commander assured that cyber units are currently cross-referencing the digital footage to map the identities of the participants. Law enforcement will initiate stringent anti-terrorism and public order litigations against those violating the organizational ban once forensic confirmation is achieved.
