Fatal bus rollover in Dhaka claims life of helper

Date:

TBM Report

A speeding passenger bus lost control and overturned near the Mohakhali Wet Market area in the capital early Saturday morning, killing the bus assistant (helper) on the spot and leaving two passengers seriously injured. The deceased was identified as Mohammad Rafique, 35, son of Nur Alam, hailing from Mymensingh Sadar Upazila. Emergency rescue teams from the Fire Service and Civil Defence, along with local police, rushed to the intersection to extricate the victims from the crumpled wreckage.

According to first responders, the incident occurred at around 6:00 AM when a Dhaka-bound passenger coach of ‘Bhati Bangla’ Paribahan, arriving from Netrokona, swerved violently while approaching the Mohakhali infrastructure. The vehicle crashed heavily into the central concrete road divider (island), causing it to flip onto its side and sustain catastrophic structural damage. The impact instantaneously crushed Rafique, who was stationed near the passenger gate, while trapping other commuters inside the cabin.

Medical officials confirmed that the injured passengers, identified as Mohammad Firoz, 40, and Mohammad Roni, 25, were evacuated to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) emergency ward. Inspector Mozaffar Faruque, In-Charge of the DMCH Police Outpost, verified the casualties, stating that one victim was pronounced dead upon arrival, while the surviving passengers are receiving intensive trauma care. Local police have impounded the bus and launched a forensic investigation to track down the driver, who absconded immediately following the crash.
