The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Finance has recommended replacing physical touchpoints with automated digital systems to minimize corruption and boost fiscal accountability. The recommendation was outlined during the committee’s second meeting, chaired by Mushfiqur Rahman, MP, at the Jatiya Sangshad Bhaban.
The committee emphasized that penalizing individual offenders is insufficient unless the underlying systemic loopholes enabling corruption are altered or eliminated. Transitioning to digitized processes is expected to streamline business operations, reduce compliance costs for traders, and raise government revenue collection.
During the session, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) presented a report on its revenue-mobilization capacity, steps taken to bridge the tax-to-GDP gap, and proposed organizational restructuring. Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, MP, and Chief Whip Md. Nurul Islam Moni, MP, along with other committee members, actively participated in the discussions.
The meeting, attended by senior secretaries from the Finance Division, ERD, and the Chairman of NBR, also formally confirmed the minutes of its inaugural session.
