Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam MP has stated that the government is committed to implementing projects by prioritizing public importance and avoiding unnecessary expenditures. He made these remarks on Tuesday after laying the foundation stone for the 882-meter Rabnabad Bridge in Patuakhali and inaugurating the Goma Bridge in Bakerganj, Barishal.
The Minister emphasized that as a politically accountable government, the administration will ensure that every penny spent on infrastructure directly benefits the people. He inaugurated the much-anticipated Goma Bridge, which connects key areas of the region, and laid the foundation for the Nalu-Baherchar bridge over the Pandav-Payra River later in the afternoon.
Addressing the public demand for toll-free bridge usage, Minister Alam clarified the government’s stance. “There are established policies for collecting tolls. Any bridge exceeding 199 meters in length must be subject to a toll for maintenance and upkeep,” he explained. However, he assured the citizens that the government would consider the overall public welfare and economic capacity when finalizing the toll rates.
The events were attended by State Minister for Road Transport Habibaur Rashid MP, State Minister for Expatriates’ Welfare Md. Nurul Haque MP, and several local lawmakers. High-ranking officials, including the Secretary of the Road Transport Division, were also present. These projects are expected to significantly boost connectivity between Patuakhali, Barishal, and the Payra Deep Sea Port, fostering economic growth in the southern region.
