A tragic road accident escalated into a major law and order crisis on the Barishal-Patuakhali highway in Nalciti upazila of Jhalakathi, after a reckless pickup truck rammed into a funeral procession carrying a corpse on a traditional cot (khatia). The violent impact caused the deceased’s body to violently dislodge onto the tarmac and critically injured four immediate family members who were carrying the structure. The horrific incident transpired near the Bokultala area under Dapdapia union on Monday night (May 18, 2026).
According to local and highway police accounts, the family members were transporting the deceased to a local graveyard for standard burial rituals when the speeding, over-logged pickup truck plowed directly into the rear of the procession. The victims, identified as the deceased’s son Md. Oli, brother-in-law Nasir, nephew Md. Reza, and a maternal grandson, sustained severe orthopedic and internal traumas. Bystanders immediately rushed the bleeding casualties to the Sher-i-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) in Barishal for emergency clinical interventions.
The structural desecration of the funeral rite ignited widespread communal outrage across the sector. Hundreds of aggregate locals and grief-stricken relatives converged on the highway, blocking all logistics networks and setting the abandoned pickup truck on fire. The vehicular arson completely paralyzed vehicular movement on the vital Barishal-Patuakhali-Kuakata regional highway for nearly two consecutive hours, generating tailbacks extending over several kilometers and stranding vital cargo deliveries.
Upon receiving tactical alerts, administrative reinforcement units from the Nalciti Police Station, alongside frontline teams from the Fire Service and Civil Defence, rushed to the flashpoint. Firefighters successfully extinguished the vehicle blaze while police units dispersed the blockading crowds using de-escalation protocols. Normal traffic gridlocks were systematically restored around 10:30 PM. The district police division confirmed that a forensic manhunt has been mobilized to track and apprehend the fugitive driver under federal transport safety provisions.
