TBM Report
The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has submitted a final report to the court, stating that they found no evidence to support the allegations filed against 28 journalists and 21 others in Chattogram. The case, filed 17 months ago during the July uprising, accused the journalists, along with former State Minister Mohammad A. Arafat, of kidnapping and torturing students. Investigating officer Inspector Mostafizur Rahman Chowdhury submitted the report in late February, citing a lack of cooperation and evidence from the plaintiff.
The plaintiff, Hasina Momtaz, filed the case on September 4, 2024, alleging that the journalists suppressed news of attacks on students and even used media vehicles to transport weapons for the then-ruling party. However, the PBI stated that despite multiple notices and visits to the plaintiff’s residence, no credible information or evidence was provided to substantiate these claims.
Responding to the final report, Hasina Momtaz claimed that the investigating officer did not consult her before finalizing the probe. “I will file a ‘Naraji’ (no-confidence) petition in court against this report,” she said, insisting that her allegations were not properly investigated. The case includes high-profile media personalities such as Suklal Das, Reaz Hyder Chowdhury, and Mintu Chowdhury, among others. The court is yet to hold a hearing on the submitted final report.
