TBM Report

Former Bangladeshi Minister and senior Awami League leader Dr. Dipu Moni has been granted a 12-hour temporary parole following the demise of her husband, Barrister Towfique Nawaz.

The Munshiganj district administration approved the release to allow Dipu Moni to attend her husband’s funeral and pay her final respects.

Her defense counsel, Gazi Faisal Islam, confirmed the administrative decision. The parole period starts at 6:00 AM on Thursday and ends at 6:00 PM the same day.

Barrister Towfique Nawaz passed away on Tuesday night at a private hospital in Dhaka at the age of 76 after battling prolonged illnesses. Following his death, his daughter Tani Dipaboli Nawaz initiated legal proceedings to secure her mother’s temporary release from custody.

Dipaboli met her mother inside Munshiganj District Jail on Wednesday morning before submitting a formal parole application to Additional Deputy Commissioner Rezaul Karim. Although the family initially requested a four-day parole, authorities sanctioned a 12-hour leave.

Family sources confirmed that the funeral prayers and burial of Barrister Towfique Nawaz will take place once Dipu Moni reaches Dhaka under police escort.

Dipu Moni was arrested on August 19, 2024, from the Baridhara DOHS area in Dhaka following the political transition in Bangladesh. She faces over 60 criminal cases and has remained incarcerated since her arrest.
