Internal probe launched as ICT prosecutor accused of demanding 1 crore BDT for bail

Date:

TBM Report

Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), Md. Aminul Islam, announced on Tuesday that an internal investigation would be conducted into allegations of gross misconduct against a recently resigned prosecutor. The move follows an investigative report revealing that Prosecutor Saimum Reza Talukdar demanded 10 million BDT (1 Crore) to facilitate the bail of former Awami League MP ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury. The scandal broke after audio recordings of WhatsApp conversations were verified and published by Prothom Alo and Netra News.

The Chief Prosecutor held a closed-door meeting with all prosecution members at the ICT premises after news of the bribe surfaced. “We are deeply saddened by these reports. An internal investigation will look into the depth of this matter,” Aminul Islam stated during a press briefing. It was revealed that despite earlier signs of misconduct, Saimum had only been removed from the specific case by the then Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam, but no broader disciplinary actions were taken at that time.

Saimum Reza, who was appointed on October 7, 2024, submitted his resignation just days ago, which was officially accepted by the Law Ministry on Monday. The ICT administration is now under scrutiny for why stricter actions were not initiated sooner. Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam emphasized that the integrity of the tribunal—which handles sensitive humanity crimes from the July uprising—must be upheld at all costs, and any ethical compromise will not be tolerated.
