The legal hurdles preventing the release of former Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy have been fully cleared following a Supreme Court ruling. The Chamber Court of the Appellate Division on Sunday (May 17, 2026) upheld the High Court’s bail orders in two remaining murder cases filed with the Siddhirganj Police Station. Chamber Justice Md. Rezaul Haq issued a “No Order” on the state’s petitions seeking a stay on her interim bail, effectively paving the way for her imminent release from custody.
With this latest judicial decision, Ivy has secured bail in all 12 criminal cases leveled against her, according to her defense counsel. The former mayor had previously obtained bail in ten separate cases, but her release was systematically deferred as law enforcement authorities repeatedly showed her arrested in consecutive cases. She was formally implicated in the final two Siddhirganj cases on March 2 and April 12, respectively, before the High Court granted her ad-interim bail on April 30.
Ivy was originally arrested by the police in the early hours of May 9 last year from her residence in the Deobhog area of Narayanganj. Following her initial detention, she was implicated in a series of cases, including multiple murder and attempted murder charges stemming from the violent clashes during the student-led mass uprising. Her legal team successfully dissolved several state-filed leave-to-appeal petitions over the past months, culminating in the Appellate Division’s comprehensive clearance of her prior ten cases on May 10.
Senior advocates Motaher Hossain Saju and SM Siddiqur Rahman led the defense during Sunday’s hearing, while Deputy Attorney General Syeda Sajia Sharmin represented the state. Speaking on the developments, Ivy’s associate counsel, SM Hridoy Rahman, confirmed that the processing and dispatch of the formal court orders to the prison authorities are currently underway. The defense anticipates that all administrative formalities will be concluded within the next few days, enabling her release within this week.
