In a decisive move against discrimination, SL Benfica has suspended five club members following an internal investigation into racist behavior directed at Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior. The incident occurred during the UEFA Champions League play-off first leg at the Estádio da Luz on February 17. The club confirmed that these individuals face potential permanent expulsion after being caught making monkey gestures and hurling racial slurs from the stands.
The match was marred by tension as Vinícius reported on-field racial provocation by Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni, leading the referee to suspend play for ten minutes under UEFA’s anti-racism protocol. While the club defended Prestianni, calling the accusations a “defamatory campaign,” they took immediate action against the spectators whose conduct violated the club’s core values. Manager José Mourinho also drew criticism for suggesting that Vinícius’s trademark dance celebrations were the catalyst for the on-field friction.
Despite the hostile environment in both Lisbon and Madrid, Vinícius Júnior delivered a masterclass performance, scoring in both legs to secure a 3-1 aggregate victory for Real Madrid. As the Spanish giants advance to the Round of 16, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent challenges regarding racism in European football. Benfica’s firm disciplinary stance underscores a growing trend of clubs taking direct responsibility for the conduct of their supporters to maintain the integrity of the sport.
