Following a historic nine-wicket victory over Australia in the Darwin Test, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto declared the triumph as the single greatest achievement in Bangladesh’s cricket history across all formats.
The magnitude of defeating Australia on their home turf becomes evident when viewed through a historical lens. Asian powerhouse Sri Lanka has never managed a Test victory on Australian soil, while Pakistan last tasted victory there back in 1995. Prior to this, India was the sole Asian nation in the 21st century to defeat Australia in a home Test. Bangladesh has now added its name to that exclusive list.
Leading from the front, Najmul played a vital 84-run knock in the first innings to steady Bangladesh’s position. His tactical acumen throughout the match earned high praise from commentary legends Ricky Ponting and David Warner. Reflecting on the feat, Najmul stated, “This is easily our biggest victory in any format. I am incredibly proud of how the boys fought and the sheer hard work we put into this.”
Najmul also highlighted the dramatic transformation of Bangladesh’s fast-bowling unit. Pace bowler Hasan Mahmud was named player of the match after taking nine wickets across two innings. “Five years ago, seamers were reluctant to play Test cricket,” Najmul observed. “Now, our pacers prioritize Test matches and strive to become world-class. Senior players like Mushfiqur Rahim and Mominul Haque have played a key role in mentoring them.”
The skipper reserved special praise for opening batter Tanjid Hasan, whose brilliant first-innings century laid the foundation for victory. Najmul noted that Tanjid displayed remarkable composure and played according to merit rather than relying solely on his white-ball aggression. Looking ahead to the second and final Test commencing in Mackay on August 22, the Bangladesh captain stressed the importance of maintaining focus and winning session by session.
