A devastating road accident claimed five lives, including three women, on the Kushtia Bypass road on Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred around 2:00 PM when a truck carrying gas cylinders collided head-on with a CNG-run auto-rickshaw, leaving the vehicle completely mangled and the community in deep mourning.
According to local sources and the Highway Police, the auto-rickshaw was heading through the bypass from the Koburhat area. The high-speed impact with the oncoming truck was so severe that three passengers died instantly on the spot. Two others succumbed to their injuries while being rushed to Kushtia General Hospital. Among the deceased, four have been identified as Amena, Komela, Zakaria, and Ashraful.
Officer-in-Charge of Kushtia Highway Police, Md. Abu Obayed, confirmed the casualties and stated that both vehicles have been seized. “While we have secured the truck and the auto-rickshaw, the truck driver managed to flee the scene,” he said. Hospital authorities confirmed that the bodies have been kept for further procedures. Police are currently conducting raids to apprehend the fugitive driver as legal actions are being initiated under the Road Transport Act.
