The Bangladesh-Nepal Friendship Society, in partnership with the Gulshan Society, organized a candle-lighting ceremony at Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed Park in Dhaka on Sunday, September 6, 2026, honoring the victims of Nepal’s devastating flash floods and mudslides.
Nepalese Ambassador to Bangladesh Ghanshyam Bhandari attended the vigil alongside foreign diplomats, development partners, and representatives from civil society organizations.
The memorial event comes in the wake of the catastrophic August 26 glacial collapse along the China-Nepal border, which unleashed a massive torrent of mud and water through northern Nepal. Local authorities report that the death toll from the Bhote Koshi floods has reached 1,287, with more than 5,083 individuals still missing amid ongoing rescue efforts.
Expressing national solidarity, the Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad formally adopted a condolence motion regarding the tragedy on August 27.
Reinforcing its diplomatic support with direct humanitarian relief, Bangladesh provided US$1 million (equivalent to BDT 123 million) to the Nepal Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir officially handed over the grant commitment during a meeting with Ambassador Bhandari at State Guest House Padma.
Kobir also conveyed a personal letter of condolence from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah. Earlier on September 1, Kobir visited the Nepalese Embassy in Dhaka to sign the official condolence book.
