Bangladesh’s gas supply will return to normal within a few days through government and alternative import channels, Finance and Planning Adviser Prof Dr Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir announced on September 7.
Speaking as the chief guest at a seminar organized by the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) in Dhaka, Dr Titumir outlined the state’s plan to stabilize the country’s energy infrastructure.
Addressing the current energy bottleneck, Dr Titumir noted that the energy sector faced severe financial bleeding and a total lack of strategic direction when the interim government took office. Previous policy decisions made the country excessively dependent on imported fossil fuels, placing deliberate pressure on industries, households, and foreign investments.
To address these vulnerabilities, the government is focusing on building new LNG infrastructure, upgrading transmission pipelines, and accelerating onshore gas exploration to create a balanced energy mix.
Regarding the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, the adviser clarified that operations will begin only after meeting all safety parameters. Full-fledged commercial production is now expected to commence in 2027.
Dr Titumir also highlighted that importing LPG through Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGC) could reduce consumer prices significantly once market monopolies are broken. He emphasized that energy sector decisions must prioritize national interest, long-term economic stability, and clean energy transition rather than short-term political gains.
