Local Government, Rural Development (LGRD) and Cooperatives Minister Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan requested Malaysia to play an active role in resolving the Rohingya humanitarian crisis, warning that the prolonged situation strains Bangladesh’s economy and threatens regional stability.
Speaking as the chief guest at a reception celebrating Malaysia’s 69th National Day and Malaysia Day at the Crown Plaza Hotel on Monday, the minister congratulated the Malaysian government and its citizens while expressing optimism about deepening bilateral ties.
Recalling historic milestones, Moyeen Khan highlighted the visit of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman to Malaysia in 1979 and the recent official visit of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. He noted that annual bilateral trade reached nearly USD 3 billion, presenting new growth channels in renewable energy, free trade, digital infrastructure, electric vehicles, and advanced manufacturing.
Addressing labor concerns, the minister stressed establishing transparent and safe migration processes to protect Bangladeshi workers from unethical recruitment syndicates.
Malaysian High Commissioner Mohd Shuhada Othman reaffirmed Kuala Lumpur’s commitment to a durable solution for the Rohingya issue, advocating for their safe, voluntary, and dignified repatriation through ASEAN, the OIC, and the United Nations.
The High Commissioner emphasized that Bangladesh is Malaysia’s second-largest trading partner in South Asia. He highlighted ongoing efforts toward finalizing a bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by 2027, along with joint initiatives in defense cooperation, semiconductor industries, healthcare tourism, and supporting Bangladesh’s engagement with ASEAN and RCEP.
