Trump featured on new $1 coin, marking first living president on US currency in a century

The United States Mint has issued a special $1 commemorative coin featuring President Donald Trump to mark the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence.

This release marks the first time in nearly a century that a living US president’s portrait has appeared on official nation’s coinage. The front of the coin showcases Trump’s profile alongside the traditional national motto, “In God We Trust.”

According to the US Mint, the limited-edition piece aims to capture “the spirit, pride, and heritage of a nation” as it approaches its quarter-millennium milestone. Demand surged immediately after launch, causing the Mint’s online portal to list rolls of 25 coins ($61) and bags of 100 coins ($154.50) as “Out of Stock” within hours.

The historical precedent dates back to 1926 during the US Sesquicentennial, when President Calvin Coolidge became the first living chief executive depicted on a circulating US half-dollar coin.

Federal statutory provisions governing US currency differentiate between paper banknotes and metal coins. While the Thayer Amendment of 1866 strictly prohibits depicting living persons on paper currency, legal advisers note this limitation does not bar portraiture on the obverse (front) side of commemorative coins.

The Trump administration previously signaled plans to introduce a $250 banknote featuring Trump’s likeness. However, implementing that proposal requires legislative approval from the US Congress to amend existing statutory restrictions on paper currency.
