IPU secretary general meets minister Shama Obaed to strengthen democratic ties

Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Secretary General Anda Filip met with State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam, MP, at her office on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. The high-level discussions focused on Rohingya repatriation, digital security for women, and ongoing efforts to strengthen democratic institutions in Bangladesh.

Welcoming Ms. Filip, State Minister Shama Obaed congratulated her on making history as the first female Secretary General in IPU’s 130-year legacy. She commended the organization’s long-standing dedication to advancing parliamentary democracy, protecting human rights, and fostering global legislative dialogue.

During the meeting, the State Minister outlined government initiatives aimed at restoring democracy and reinforcing institutional integrity. She reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to transparent, accountable, and inclusive governance.

Addressing modern digital threats, Shama Obaed highlighted the alarming rise of online harassment, misinformation, and disinformation targeting women and young girls. She urged lawmakers globally to build robust parliamentary mechanisms to ensure online safety.

The State Minister also brought attention to the escalating burden of the Rohingya crisis. She called on international parliamentarians to maintain persistent advocacy for the safe, dignified, and early repatriation of forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals.

IPU Secretary General Anda Filip commended Bangladesh’s measures to revitalize democratic frameworks. She pledged to deepen engagement through bilateral exchanges, technical support, and capacity-building programs to help sustain democratic progress in the country.
