The British High Commission in Dhaka hosted a pre-departure reception on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, to celebrate the latest cohort of Bangladeshi scholars selected for the prestigious Chevening and Commonwealth scholarship programmes.
Held at the British High Commissioner’s Residence, the event brought together departing scholars, distinguished alumni networks, representatives from the Bangladesh Association of Commonwealth Scholars and Fellows, and the Chevening Alumni Association of Bangladesh.
The gathering offered the incoming postgraduate students an opportunity to build networks with experienced alumni and fellow awardees before embarking on their academic journeys at top-tier UK universities.
Welcoming the scholars, British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Sarah Cooke highlighted the deep-rooted educational ties between both nations. She congratulated the awardees on earning their spots through a rigorous selection process.
“These scholarships reflect the strong partnership between the UK and Bangladesh and our shared commitment to education, leadership, and opportunity,” High Commissioner Cooke noted. She expressed confidence that returning scholars would drive positive change across their respective sectors in Bangladesh.
This year’s Chevening cycle marked a strategic milestone in Bangladesh with global banking giant HSBC joining as a corporate partner for the first time, directly funding one Bangladeshi Chevening scholar.
Funded primarily by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) alongside the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, these flagship programmes support talent acquisition and sustainable development across partner countries.
