The Embassy of Algeria in Dhaka observed National Mujahid Day on Thursday, honoring two decisive milestones in the nation’s independence movement: the North Constantine Offensive of 1955 and the Soummam Congress of 1956.

The ceremony took place at 11:00 AM on August 20, 2026, at the embassy premises on behalf of Algerian Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr. Abdelouahab Saidani. Members of the diplomatic corps, Bangladeshi government officials, and distinguished guests gathered to mark the occasion.

This year’s theme, “We Follow in Their Footsteps of Struggle,” underscored national sovereignty, sacrifice, and the enduring values of unity.

Embassy representatives outlined the historical alignment between the two milestones. The North Constantine Offensive on August 20, 1955, led by revolutionary icon Zighout Youcef, demonstrated massive popular backing for the National Liberation Front (FLN). It expanded the armed liberation movement and elevated Algeria’s cause to international forums, including the United Nations.

Exactly one year later, the Soummam Congress of August 20, 1956, institutionalized the revolution. The summit established structured political and military frameworks, laying the institutional blueprint for the modern Algerian state.

The commemoration drew historical parallels between Algeria’s anti-colonial struggle and Bangladesh’s 1971 War of Liberation. Both nations overcame socio-economic inequality and cultural suppression through popular mobilization to secure national sovereignty.

Concluding the event, embassy officials affirmed that the legacy of August 20 continues to guide Algeria’s foreign policy and national identity, while deepening bilateral solidarity with Bangladesh.
