At least 16 people were killed and over 130 injured after Russian drones struck a crowded shopping centre in Kryvyi Rih, central Ukraine. Regional officials confirmed that 23 children were among the wounded, with around 30 victims remaining in critical condition.
The attack unfolded on Friday afternoon (August 21, 2026) when multiple Russian strike drones targeted the largest shopping complex in Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Authorities described the strike as a deliberate “double-tap” maneuver. A second drone hit the roof about thirty minutes after the initial wave, explicitly endangering emergency crews assisting survivors.
The explosions sparked a massive blaze across the complex, engulfing several storefronts. Emergency responders rushed to clear heavy debris and extract trapped civilians, transferring dozens to nearby regional medical facilities.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the bombing in a public statement, calling it a deliberate and cynical act of violence. He reiterated calls for international allies to hold Moscow accountable and strengthen air defense coverage over civilian infrastructure.
Aerial bombardments targeting Ukrainian urban centers have escalated sharply in recent months. Reports from the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine indicate that 437 civilians were killed in July alone, marking the highest monthly civilian casualty count recorded since May 2022.
