Top Israeli security officials have warned that inflammatory rhetoric from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz following recent airstrikes in Syria risks sparking an unnecessary escalation with Turkey.
According to a report by Israel’s Channel 12, security insiders suspect the Netanyahu administration is escalating anti-Turkey political rhetoric to consolidate support ahead of upcoming Knesset elections. However, key defense personnel are advocating for restraint to avoid a direct political or military confrontation with Ankara.
The tensions follow a Tuesday morning airstrike conducted by the Israeli military on the Abu al-Duhur military airbase in Idlib, positioned approximately 70 kilometers from the Turkish border. While the operational decision was executed by defense forces, security officials had intended to maintain low visibility surrounding the strike. Subsequent public remarks by Netanyahu and Katz disrupted this diplomatic caution.
Concurrently, Turkey has intensified legal and diplomatic pressure against Israeli leadership. Ankara formally requested Interpol to issue a Red Notice for Prime Minister Netanyahu and other key figures regarding the Israeli military operation against the Gaza-bound Global Samud Flotilla.
