Four Bangladeshi nationals returned home on July 30, 2026, after serving detention in Algeria for illegal entry and working without valid documentation.
Algerian police originally arrested 14 Bangladeshi nationals on January 13, 2025. Investigations revealed that human traffickers smuggled most of these individuals into the North African nation using illicit land and sea routes.
Upon receiving notification from host authorities, the Embassy of Bangladesh in Algiers intervened by establishing direct contact with the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and local law enforcement agencies.
Funded directly by the Bangladesh government, the diplomatic mission retained local legal counsel to represent the detainees throughout the judicial proceedings. Embassy officials regularly attended court hearings and conducted consular jail visits to review the welfare of the captives.
Following extensive legal intervention, an Algerian court ordered the release of four individuals on June 30, 2026, paving the way for their deportation back to Dhaka.
The Bangladesh Embassy remains in active negotiations with Algerian authorities to secure the unconditional release and repatriation of the remaining ten detainees. Embassy officials maintain continuous communication with the families in Bangladesh, keeping them informed of legal developments and health status updates.
