Bangladesh launches advanced storm surge model and climate projection data to combat natural disasters

Date:

TBM Report

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has operationalized a high-resolution climate projection dataset alongside an advanced storm surge forecasting model to strengthen the country’s disaster response framework.

Developed under the JICA-funded “Strengthening the Capacity of Weather and Climate Services” project, the system accurately predicts storm surge height, coastal inundation zones, and sea wave patterns during severe cyclones.

To mark the operationalization, BMD and JICA hosted a seminar titled “Climate Projections and Storm Surge Modeling for Effective Disaster Risk Reduction in Bangladesh” at the Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation in Dhaka on July 30, 2026. Defence Secretary Md. Ashraf Uddin attended as Chief Guest.

Special guests included Takahashi Junko, Chief Representative of JICA Bangladesh, and Brigadier General Md. Saifur Rahman, Wing Chief at the Ministry of Defence. BMD Director Md. Mominul Islam chaired the session, which brought together experts from the Disaster Management Department, Water Development Board, and Dhaka University.

The technical framework benefited from intensive training led by Dr. Akihiko Murata and Dr. Nadao Kohno from the Japan Meteorological Agency’s Meteorological Research Institute (MRI). Their sessions focused on modernizing BMD’s analytical capabilities and disaster risk mapping.

The latest projections indicate an increase in monsoon rainfall over northeastern Bangladesh, accompanied by higher risks of flash floods. Torrential rain events, post-monsoon heatwaves, and dense winter fog are also expected to occur more frequently.

BMD has already integrated the new forecasting system into its official website, making real-time storm surge data accessible to the public. The initiative directly aligns with the World Meteorological Organization’s “Early Warnings for All” global mandate.
