The body of a 9-year-old schoolgirl, Farzana Sultana, who had gone missing hours earlier, was recovered by police from a wardrobe inside a neighbor’s house in Kaliganj upazila of Satkhira on Monday night.
Following the discovery, the suspect, identified as Sumaiya (26), was lynched by an enraged mob of locals.
The tragic incident occurred in the Kazla Kashibati area under Nalta Union. The deceased child was a third-grade student at Kazla Kashibati Government Primary School and the daughter of Latif Uddin. Sumaiya was the wife of a local vendor, Amirul.
According to local sources and police, Farzana went to school at around 8:30 AM on Monday but failed to return home after classes ended. As searches by family members yielded no results, they reported the matter to Kaliganj Police Station.
Acting on the complaint, a police team conducted a search operation with local assistance and recovered Farzana’s body from a wardrobe drawer inside Sumaiya’s home around 8:00 PM. News of the discovery triggered intense anger in the locality, leading a crowd to beat Sumaiya to death on the spot before police could control the situation.
Locals alleged that Sumaiya killed the young girl to steal her gold earrings. Kaliganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahidul Islam confirmed the incident, stating that both bodies have been recovered for autopsies at Satkhira Sadar Hospital morgue as a formal investigation proceeds.
