A specialized tribunal in Jamalpur has sentenced seven men to death and imposed capital financial penalties following their conviction in a brutal gang rape case that sparked widespread regional outrage. On Monday afternoon (July 6, 2026), Judge Abdur Rahim of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 delivered the benchmark verdict, mandating a fine of BDT 100,000 for each convict, while acquitting one co-accused due to a lack of incriminating evidence.
The capital convicts facing the gallows were identified as Pappu, Biju, Badsha, Jewel, Ashraful, Jasim, and Asmat—all residents of various villages within the Bakshiganj sub-district. Conversely, the tribunal ordered the immediate release of Idris Ali after state prosecutors failed to establish his complicity in the felony. Court registries confirmed that the victim, a married woman residing in the neighboring Sherpur district, attended the judicial proceedings during the formal reading of the penal decrees.
According to Case Prosecutor Fazlul Haq, the violent assault transpired around midnight on May 25, 2025, when the victim was commuting toward her rented residence in Jankipur via an easy-bike driven by Idris Ali. The perpetrators intercepted the vehicle, forcibly transferred the woman onto a flatbed van, and transported her to an abandoned kitchen structure in Nilakhia Uttarpara. There, the convicts subjected her to aggregate sexual assault before fleeing the crime scene.
The following morning, the victim filed a formal First Information Report (FIR) at the Bakshiganj Police Station, naming six primary suspects and several unidentified accomplices. Following an extensive eight-month forensic and field investigation, law enforcement agencies submitted a formal charge sheet on April 15 of this year. The tribunal fast-tracked the adjudication process, rendering the definitive death sentences after evaluating the crucial depositions of seven primary state witnesses.
