Clash over land dispute leaves 1 dead and 15 injured in sherpur; UP member’s house set on fire

A violent clash rooted in a long-standing land dispute has left a young man dead and at least 15 others severely injured in the Sreebardi upazila of Sherpur district. Following the casualty, an aggrieved mob of locals and relatives retaliated by launching a coordinated attack and setting fire to the residence of an accused Union Parishad (UP) member. The fatal incident occurred on Monday morning (May 18, 2026) in Madarpur village under the Khoria Kazirchar union.

The deceased was identified as Ashraful Islam (32), a resident of the affected village. According to local law enforcement channels, standard verbal altercations between Ashraful’s family and the supporters of UP Member Nurul Amin rapidly escalated into an open riot. Both factions deployed heavy domestic weapons, resulting in Ashraful sustaining deep, penetrative wounds. He was rushed to the Sreebardi Upazila Health Complex, where emergency physicians declared him dead on arrival due to catastrophic trauma.

The retaliatory violence erupted almost immediately after the death confirmation reached the village. The angry mob bypassed local administrative barriers, breaching the perimeter of UP Member Nurul Amin’s household before igniting the primary structures. Multiple rooms and extensive household assets were reduced to ash before combined units of the Bangladesh Police and the Fire Service and Civil Defence could secure the area and contain the arson.

Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan, the Additional Superintendent of Police in Sherpur, confirmed the casualty and the subsequent arson to the media. He emphasized that tactical reinforcement teams have been deployed to the sector to enforce a strict de-escalation protocol and prevent further community riots. The district police have initiated a forensic grid search to identify, locate, and apprehend the primary instigators of both the murder and the subsequent arson for summary prosecution.
