Amazon sued for retaining overcharges post-trump tariff dismissal

Date:

TBM Report

A group of consumers has filed a proposed class-action lawsuit against the US technology and e-commerce giant, Amazon, alleging that the company failed to refund millions of dollars overcharged under the pretext of former US President Donald Trump’s tariffs. The lawsuit, filed on Friday (May 15, 2026) in a Seattle Federal Court, claims that Amazon generated hundreds of millions of dollars in unjust profits by passing the cost of import tariffs directly onto consumers.

According to the complaint, even after the US Supreme Court declared those specific tariffs illegal, Amazon continuously refused to reimburse the excess amounts collected from its customers. The plaintiffs argue that Amazon acted unfairly and enriched itself unlawfully by retaining the inflated pricing revenue long after the legal basis for the tariffs had been struck down. The lawsuit seeks full restitution of the overcharged funds alongside suitable statutory damages for the affected consumers.

While the legal action marks a significant challenge regarding corporate transparency and consumer rights in the e-commerce sector, Amazon has yet to issue an official response. Representatives for the retail giant did not immediately comment on the pending litigation. Industry analysts suggest that the outcome of this case could set a vital precedent for how global e-commerce platforms handle regulatory price adjustments and consumer refunds.
