Ukraine has executed one of its largest coordinated drone assaults targeting the Russian capital, Moscow, and 13 other regions, leaving at least four people dead and over a dozen injured. Russian defense officials confirmed that the overnight retaliation wave involved nearly 600 suicide drones penetrating deep into Russian territory. The strategic escalation follows a stern warning from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy last week, vowing harsh retribution for recent deadly Russian missile strikes on Kyiv.
According to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the country’s air defense networks intercepted and neutralized 556 Ukrainian drones overnight, destroying an additional 30 after daybreak. The swarm targeted critical zones including the occupied Crimean peninsula, alongside the Black Sea and Sea of Azov maritime corridors. Despite the extensive interceptions, falling debris and direct impacts inflicted significant infrastructure damage, predominantly surrounding the outer rings of the Moscow oblast.
Andrey Vorobyov, the Governor of the Moscow region, described the scale of the offensive as unprecedented. He reported that a direct drone strike on a residential property in the northern Khimki district resulted in the death of a woman. Furthermore, search and rescue teams extracted the bodies of two men from under the rubble of collapsed structures in Pogorelki village, while operations continue to locate other potential survivors amidst the damaged residential complexes.
In Moscow city, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin disclosed that air defense units brought down over 80 drones bound for the capital’s core, injuring 12 construction workers. While falling fragments damaged three residential buildings located near a major Moscow oil and gas refinery, Sobyanin emphasized that the refinery’s automated production lines remained unaffected. Military analysts suggest that this operation underscores Kyiv’s rapidly advancing long-range domestic drone capabilities, aimed at bringing the logistical cost of the war directly home to Moscow.
