Al Jazeera investigation: Targeting of Minab girls’ school likely “deliberate”

Date:

TBM Report

A harrowing investigation by Al Jazeera’s digital unit into the missile strikes in Minab, Southern Iran, suggests that the attack on the “Shajareh Tayyebeh” girls’ school, which killed 165 children and staff, was likely a deliberate act rather than collateral damage. While the United States and Israel initially claimed ignorance of the civilian site, satellite forensic evidence spanning a decade reveals a systematic separation of the school from any adjacent military facility since 2016.

The tragedy occurred on the morning of February 28, 2026, when guided missiles brought down the school’s roof on students aged 7 to 12. Al Jazeera’s analysis highlights a startling contradiction: a newly built clinic located between the military base and the school was left untouched, while the school—a civilian landmark for over ten years—was directly hit. This surgical precision indicates that the attacking forces possessed high-resolution intelligence, making the claim of an “accidental hit” on a decade-old primary school nearly impossible to sustain under international law.

Human rights monitors, including Euro-Med Monitor, have classified the strike as a grave violation of International Humanitarian Law. The investigation also debunked Israeli-linked social media campaigns that blamed a failed Iranian interceptor. Using geolocation and reverse image searches, Al Jazeera proved that the visuals used to support such claims were from an unrelated incident 1,300km away in Zanjan. The deliberate engineering of the school site, featuring playgrounds and civilian entrances, was clearly visible in all pre-strike aerial surveys.

The Minab incident echoes a decades-long pattern of strikes on civilian infrastructure followed by official denials, reminiscent of the 1970 Bahr al-Baqar school bombing in Egypt. As the city enters a 40-day mourning period for the 165 victims, the evidence points toward a strategic attempt to inflict maximum societal shock. The exhaustion of morgue capacities and the sight of refrigerated trucks holding small coffins have become the ultimate symbol of the catastrophic failure—or intentional disregard—of civilian protection in modern warfare.
