Renowned Bollywood comedian Rajpal Yadav, known for his iconic roles that have brought laughter to millions across the subcontinent, now finds himself in a somber reality within the walls of Delhi’s Tihar Jail.

The actor surrendered on February 5, 2026, following a Delhi High Court order in a long-standing cheque-bounce case involving nearly 9 crore Indian Rupees (approx. Tk12.5 crore).

The roots of Yadav’s legal crisis trace back to 2010 when he borrowed 5 crore rupees to fund his directorial debut, Ata Pata Laapata. The film’s failure at the box office triggered a financial spiral.

Despite various attempts to settle the debt—including a fresh demand draft of 25 lakh rupees and a new repayment plan presented by his counsel on the day of his surrender—the court remained firm. Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma observed that while compassion is a virtue, the court cannot create “special circumstances” for individuals based on their professional background, emphasizing that judicial discipline must be maintained.

A cry for solidarity

In a move that has stirred the Indian film fraternity, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) issued a heartfelt appeal on Wednesday, February 11, urging the industry to stand by the embattled actor. In a formal statement, FWICE clarified that this is not an appeal for “charity” but a call for “solidarity.”

“The current financial crisis is not a reflection of his character or integrity,” the federation stated, noting that professional setbacks can affect anyone, regardless of their fame. The organization has appealed to producers, directors, and artists to provide moral and financial support to help Yadav clear his liabilities and regain his “freedom and dignity.”

We are all alone

Moments before entering the jail to begin his six-month sentence, a visibly emotional Yadav shared his despair with reporters. “Sir, what should I do? I have no money left, and I see no other way,” he said. In a poignant reflection on the industry’s nature, he added, “Here, we are all alone. There are no true friends. I have to deal with this crisis on my own.”

A wave of support

However, the tide seems to be turning as several A-list celebrities and industry figures have pledged assistance. Music producer Rao Inderjeet Singh Yadav has announced a significant financial aid of 1.11 crore rupees for the actor’s family. Earlier, actor Sonu Sood extended a professional hand, offering Yadav a role in his upcoming film along with a signing amount to provide immediate relief.

Other notable figures, including Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Gurmeet Choudhary, have reportedly expressed their willingness to support their colleague. Even controversial figure Kamaal R Khan (KRK) has pledged 10 lakh rupees toward the settlement.

As the actor begins his term, the industry’s response serves as a rare display of unity, aimed at ensuring that one of cinema’s most beloved comic talents can eventually return to the screen and a life of normalcy.
