National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam MP delivered a sharp warning to the interim government over proposed increases in interview marks for public service exams, recalling how student resistance previously reshaped the nation’s political landscape.
Speaking as the chief guest at a discussion titled “Youth’s Political Thought in Building a Discrimination-Free Bangladesh” at Barishal University (BU) on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, the student leader criticized recent administrative proposals regarding recruitment tests.
“The quota movement sent Sheikh Hasina to Delhi. If you drastically raise viva marks, you will not even realize where the consequences will lead you,” Nahid warned during his address at the university’s Kirtankhola Hall. The event was organized by Jatiya Chhatrashakti’s BU chapter.
Commending the university’s role during the July Mass Uprising, Nahid noted that BU students maintained an unflinching front throughout the protests. He expressed concerns over regression in public infrastructure and governance, urging policymakers to ensure Bangladesh keeps pace with global progress rather than sliding backward into past decades.
The NCP convener slammed previous political practices of opening regional universities merely to create party patronage jobs. He called on the government to abandon token expansion in favor of improving academic standards across existing public universities.
Nahid highlighted the contradiction in proposal plans to increase viva marks in job examinations by up to 400 percent, pointing out that current government leaders had advocated for reducing interview weighting before assuming power. He urged authorities to refrain from unilateral policy decisions without consulting key stakeholders.
Chaired by Jatiya Chhatrashakti BU Convener Mohammad Belal, the seminar was also addressed by NCP Northern Region Chief Coordinator Sarjis Alam, Joint Convener Sarwar Tushar, and Central Joint Member Secretary Dr. Mahmuda Alam Mitu. Prizes were later distributed to the winners of the ‘July 36’ quiz competition.
