Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman assumes office as the President of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. He will lead the premier multilateral global organ over the next year, steering debates and international policy discussions at UN Headquarters in New York.

The ceremonial transition begins at 9:00 PM Bangladesh Standard Time (11:00 AM EST) with the formal closing of the 80th session, followed immediately by the oath-taking ceremony of Dr. Rahman.

Ahead of his swearing-in, Dr. Rahman will address international correspondents at a press briefing scheduled for 8:45 PM BST (10:45 AM EST). The incoming President will outline his vision, strategic goals, and procedural priorities for the upcoming session, focusing on pressing global challenges.

Following his oath, Dr. Rahman will preside over his first plenary meeting of the 81st UNGA session at 1:00 AM BST (3:00 PM EST). The plenary marks the official start of working deliberations under Bangladesh’s presidency.
