The University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh is actively working on a strategic framework to transform the nation into a regional and global higher education hub.

Speaking at the “QS Bangladesh Forum 2026” held at the Sheraton Dhaka on Monday (August 17, 2026), UGC Member Professor Dr. Abdullah-Al-Mamun outlined the commission’s roadmap to integrate Bangladeshi universities into global academic networks and upgrade infrastructure to attract international students.

Organized by American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB), the forum brought together policymakers, vice-chancellors, and industry leaders. The leadership panel, titled “From Campus to Capability: Closing Bangladesh’s Future Skills Gap in the AI Era,” was moderated by QS Chief Commercial Officer Jason Newman.

Professor Mamun highlighted that under the Higher Education Acceleration and Transformation (HEAT) project, “International Desks” will be established across domestic universities. These dedicated units will streamline institutional collaboration, joint research initiatives, and faculty-student exchange programs with overseas institutions.

To accommodate foreign scholars, the commission is collaborating with relevant authorities to simplify visa procedures while encouraging universities to develop modern residential and academic infrastructure suited for long-term stays.

Education Minister Dr. A. N. M. Ehsanul Hoque Milan attended the inauguration as the chief guest, while UGC Chairman Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed delivered the keynote address.

Supported by QS, UGC, and the Association of Private Universities of Bangladesh (APUB), the daylong forum set target milestones ahead of the “QS World University Rankings 2028.” Panel speakers included AIUB Trustee Dr. Carmen Z. Lamagna, Chittagong University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Mohammad Al-Forkan, BRAC University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Syed Ferhat Anwar, and Purbani Group Managing Director Shafiqul Islam Sarkar (Sohel).
