The Bangladesh government is seriously considering establishing a separate pay scale and specialized salary structure for teachers to enhance their social dignity and living standards, Education Minister Dr. A. N. M. Ehsanul Hoque Milan said.
Speaking as the chief guest at a textbook review workshop titled “Khelay Khelay Shikhi” at a Dhaka hotel on Tuesday (August 18, 2026), the minister emphasized that comparing teachers’ compensation with other professions undermines their unique role in nation-building.
Addressing teacher remuneration and professional status, Dr. Milan highlighted that high-level government discussions regarding the dedicated pay structure remain positive. However, policymakers are evaluating various proposals submitted by multiple teacher associations before finalizing the policy framework.
Responding to recent remarks made by an opposition lawmaker in parliament, the minister stated that comparing teachers’ pay scales with other service cadres disrespects the teaching profession. He reiterated that the administration aims to ensure both financial security and comprehensive career development for educators.
Addressing the ongoing shortage of educators in primary and secondary schools, Dr. Milan acknowledged that administrative bottlenecks and legal disputes dating back to 2017 had stalled recruitment drives. He assured that the current government is actively resolving these legal hurdles to fill vacant headmaster and assistant teacher positions quickly.
The minister also underscored the government’s commitment to expanding vocational and lifelong technical education to transform the country’s youth into skilled human resources.
Chaired by National Academy for Primary Education (NAPE) Director General Farid Ahmad, the workshop featured remarks from State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj, State Minister for Youth and Sports Md. Aminul Haque, Save the Children Country Director Suman Sengupta, and Director General of the Directorate of Primary Education Shahina Ferdousi.
