In a tragic incident, police have recovered the partially decomposed body of a Barishal University (BU) student from his rented accommodation near the campus. The deceased, identified as Uchchhas Karmakar, was a student in the Department of Geology and Mining from the 2018-19 academic session. Law enforcement officers recovered his hanging body from a ground-floor room at a student mess in the Khalpar area adjacent to the university around 11:30 PM on Tuesday, July 21, 2026.
According to local sources, the room had remained locked from the inside for several days. Residents of neighboring rooms alerted the mess owner and the local police station after a strong foul odor began emanating from the room. Upon receiving the emergency call, a team from Bandar Police Station responded to the spot, broke open the locked door, and found the student hanging from the ceiling fan.
Upon receiving news of the recovery, members of the university’s proctorial body, department faculty, and fellow students gathered at the premises. Expressing grief over the incident, Assistant Proctor Dr. Gazi Md. Sakhawat Hossain confirmed that the university administration dispatched a team immediately to assist the police with legal procedures and support the investigation.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Saiful of Bandar Police Station stated that judging by the condition of the body, the student likely died at least two to three days ago. The body was sent to the morgue at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital for an autopsy to ascertain the exact cause and time of death. Police officials clarified that whether the death was a suicide or involved foul play will be confirmed only after receiving the official forensic report.
