In a catastrophic industrial accident highlighting persistent occupational hazards, at least ten factory workers sustained severe burn injuries following a massive fire at a salt processing plant in Chittagong’s Boalkhali sub-district. The tragic incident transpired at approximately 11:00 AM on Thursday (July 16, 2026) within the manufacturing facility of Confidence Salt Factory, located in the West Banu Member Tek municipal zone. All injured personnel were rapidly evacuated from the smoke-filled facility and rushed to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for immediate emergency interventions.
Preliminary investigations conducted by first responders indicate that the blaze erupted instantaneously due to an electrical short circuit in the primary production assembly line while the laborers were executing their routine shifts. The victims hail from various sub-districts of Chittagong and include Didarul Alam, Uzzal Das, Mohammad Liton, Sirajul Islam, Zahidul Alam, Mohammad Zahid Hossain, Nur Nabi, Mohammad Alam, Mahmudul Haque, and Selim Uddin. The rapid expansion of the flames left the workers with minimal avenues for escape, causing extensive thermal trauma.
Confirming the medical influx, Sub-Inspector (SI) Ala Uddin of the CMCH police outpost stated that the ten victims were admitted in critical condition. Attending burn specialists and plastic surgeons noted that five to six of the denched laborers have suffered extensive second and third-degree burns, with severe inhalation injuries compromising their respiratory tracts. These critically injured individuals have been placed under constant clinical surveillance within the intensive care infrastructure, with medical boards describing their prognoses as highly critical.
Industrial safety advocates reiterate that the recurring nature of such electrical blazes in medium-scale processing factories underscores the critical absence of rigorous electrical compliance audits and operational fire-suppressing systems. Local law enforcement, in coordination with the Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence, has initiated a formal probe to ascertain whether structural negligence or a lack of emergency exits contributed to the high casualty rate. Local governance officials assured that stringent legal liabilities will be enforced if any institutional safety infractions are uncovered during the judicial inquiry.
