In a decisive move to modernize and accelerate the transport infrastructure of Bangladesh’s southern delta, the Secretary of the Bridges Division and the Bangladesh Bridges Authority (BBA), Md. Abdur Rauf, executed a comprehensive field inspection of the proposed bridge sites over the Sugandha River in Jhalakathi on Saturday morning (July 11). The high-level reconnaissance mission aimed to evaluate the structural feasibility, hydrological profiles, and geographical alignments for the planned mega-structure. The project is anticipated to act as a vital economic catalyst, dynamically transforming the regional logistics network and integrating isolated sub-districts into the core national supply chain.

Accompanied by senior structural engineers and administrative planners, the Bridges Secretary initiated the riverine survey via speedboats, departing from the Jhalakathi College Ferry Ghat. The technical delegation rigorously audited three strategically proposed locations spanning the Sugandha River, specifically focusing on the Shaitpakia and Sutalori points within the Nalchity sub-district, alongside a designated urban node adjacent to the Jhalakathi town petrol pump. During the onsite inspection, officials gathered critical technical data regarding riverbed bathymetry, seasonal current velocities, and navigation channel requirements from local water resource experts to optimize the preliminary design matrix.

The institutional realization of this proposed bridge will not only bridge the historic transit gap between the two adjacent sub-districts but will also profoundly strengthen the overarching southern communication architecture. By bypassing traditional, weather-dependent ferry operations, the bridge will slash transit times for commercial freight moving toward capital-centric logistics hubs, mitigating supply chain bottlenecks. Regional planners project that the fixed river crossing will provide seamless connectivity, enhancing safety parameters and offering a redundant, highly resilient route for the national highway grid operating in coastal divisions.

Furthermore, economic analysts and local governance experts emphasize that the infrastructure asset will trigger a massive wave of private sector investments, industrialization, and localized employment generation across the historically underserved riverbanks. The enhanced connectivity is expected to directly optimize the agricultural supply chain, allowing rural farmers to transport perishable aquaculture and crop yields to major urban markets rapidly. Following the completion of the survey, the Bridges Authority confirmed that these technical datasets will be institutionalized into a formal feasibility report, which will be forwarded to the upper echelons of the cabinet for fiscal allocation and definitive project approvals.
