The Ministry of Public Administration has officially issued a gazette notification declaring a seven-day general holiday for the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha. According to the announcement made on Thursday (May 14, 2026), all government, semi-government, autonomous, and private offices will remain closed from May 25 to May 31. This extended break is intended to facilitate citizens’ travel and celebrations for one of the largest religious festivals.
In a notable administrative adjustment, the government has cancelled the scheduled weekly holiday on May 23 (Saturday). Consequently, all offices will remain operational on that day to compensate for the extended festive break. This makes May 24 (Sunday) the final working day before the Eid holidays commence. The decision aims to balance administrative productivity while allowing employees a lengthy period for the festival.
The notification clarified that emergency services will remain exempt from this general holiday. Essential operations including electricity, water, gas, fire services, and port activities will continue uninterrupted. Furthermore, cleaning services, telephone and internet providers, postal services, and all emergency healthcare facilities at hospitals will remain fully functional to assist the public during the break.
Regarding the banking and judicial sectors, separate instructions will be forthcoming. Bangladesh Bank is expected to issue a circular for commercial banks, while the Supreme Court will decide on the operation of the courts. Additionally, the Ministry of Labour and Employment will issue separate guidelines to implement the general holiday across the private sector, ensuring uniformity in the festive break nationwide.
