Bangladesh is grappling with a severe measles outbreak as the number of suspected cases surged past 50,000, with six more symptom-related deaths reported in the last 24 hours. According to the latest update from the Health Emergency Operation Center and Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Monday (May 11, 2026), the situation is becoming increasingly critical across the country.
Official data indicates that since mid-March, at least 65 individuals have died from confirmed measles cases. However, the total number of deaths with measles-like symptoms has reached a staggering 350. Since March 5, lab tests have confirmed the virus in 6,937 individuals, but health officials remain alarmed by the 50,500 suspected cases currently being monitored nationwide.
The influx of patients has put a strain on the national healthcare system, with 35,980 individuals hospitalized for suspected measles since the beginning of the outbreak. While 31,992 patients have successfully recovered and been discharged, thousands more are still undergoing treatment. Health experts emphasize that measles is highly contagious and poses a significant risk to unvaccinated children and immunocompromised individuals.
The DGHS is working to expedite vaccination campaigns and strengthen surveillance at the grassroots level. Authorities have urged parents to ensure their children are up-to-date with the MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) vaccine. With the infection rate crossing the 50,000 mark, the focus has shifted toward immediate isolation of suspected cases and providing intensive care to minimize complications and further fatalities.
