In a shocking breach of campus security, Associate Professor Asma Sadia Luna, the Chairperson of the Social Welfare Department at Islamic University (IU), was stabbed to death inside her office on Wednesday afternoon. The assailant, identified as Fazlur Rahman—a staff member recently transferred from the department—reportedly slit the professor’s throat before attempting to take his own life in the same manner.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the motive was rooted in administrative grievances. Fazlur Rahman reportedly harbored deep-seated resentment over salary complications and his recent transfer to the Political Science department. Witnesses stated that the attack occurred during office hours within the Social Science faculty building. Following the murder, the suspect inflicted severe wounds on his own neck and is currently in critical condition under police custody at a local hospital.
The incident has sparked mass protests among IU students, who are demanding immediate justice and a total overhaul of the campus security infrastructure. The murder brings back painful memories of previous unsolved crimes on campus, including the death of student Sajid Abdullah. As the university enters a period of mourning, the IU Teachers’ Association has called for an emergency meeting to address the rising vulnerability of academic staff in their workplaces.
