TBM Report
Pomegranates, locally known as Dalim, are packed with an array of health benefits. Rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, this vibrant fruit is a boon for both internal health and skin radiance.
Nutritionist Mousumi Majumdar highlights that pomegranates offer significant protection against harmful UV rays and serve as an excellent source of Vitamin C. “It keeps the skin youthful, reduces inflammation, and even prevents hair loss. It is also widely recognized for its anti-cancer properties,” she noted.
A detailed 2024 report by the Public Health University outlines the following key benefits of the fruit:
Skin Protection and Anti-Aging
Pomegranates act as a natural shield against UV damage. The presence of ellagic acid reduces the risk of skin tumors, while antioxidants help flush out toxins. By promoting the production of collagen and elastin, pomegranate juice prevents wrinkles and extends the life of skin cells, keeping the complexion vibrant and youthful.
Immunity and Vitamin C
Eating a single pomegranate can provide roughly 17% of the daily required intake of Vitamin C. This boosts the immune system, offering protection against common ailments like coughs and colds.
Heart Health and Stroke Prevention
Pomegranates are a rich source of tannins, anthocyanins, and polyphenols. They help lower bad cholesterol levels while boosting HDL (good cholesterol), which aids in managing blood pressure and significantly reduces the risk of strokes.
Cancer Prevention
The juice is known to inhibit the growth of cancer cells, showing particular efficacy in suppressing prostate and urinary tract cancers.
Acne Management and Weight Loss
By aiding digestion and keeping the gut clean, pomegranates help prevent acne. The Vitamin C content also regulates oil glands. Furthermore, the nutrients in the fruit prevent excess fat accumulation, making it an ideal addition to a weight-loss diet.
Hair and Scalp Care
Regular consumption improves blood circulation in the scalp, strengthening hair follicles and reducing hair fall. It also adds a healthy shine and texture to the hair.
Managing Diabetes and Alzheimer’s
Despite its sweetness, the dietary fiber in pomegranates helps regulate blood sugar, making it safe for diabetic patients. Additionally, it is considered a “superfood” for the brain, aiding memory and acting as a supportive dietary measure for Alzheimer’s patients.
Digestion and Hydration
Pomegranates are even more effective than green tea for skin hydration. The fruit also regulates metabolism and is a traditional remedy for digestive issues, including diarrhea and vomiting.
