TBM Report
Bangladesh recorded six more deaths from measles-like symptoms in the past 24 hours, taking the total nationwide casualty count from the current outbreak to 908 since mid-March.
According to the latest daily bulletin issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Sunday (August 16), the deaths occurred between 8:00 AM Saturday and 8:00 AM Sunday. While no fatalities were reported among laboratory-confirmed cases in the last 24 hours, all six victims died showing classic measles symptoms.
Health department data reveals that out of the total 908 fatalities logged since March 15, 99 patients died of laboratory-confirmed measles, while 809 succumbed to measles-like symptoms. Epidemiologists emphasize that although people of all age groups remain susceptible to the virus, children continue to bear the heaviest burden of infection and mortality during this outbreak.
Over the last 24 hours, health facilities registered 1,021 new patients presenting measles symptoms, raising the cumulative total of symptomatic cases to 142,797 since March 15. Additionally, 80 individuals tested positive for measles during the same period, bringing the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 17,880.
On a positive note, recovery rates remain substantial. Out of 124,457 patients admitted to hospitals with measles symptoms over the past five months, 119,939 have fully recovered and received discharge.
Regional tracking indicates that three of the latest six fatalities occurred in the Dhaka division, while the remaining three deaths were reported from the Sylhet, Rajshahi, and Mymensingh divisions, respectively. Public health officials continue to stress the need for accelerated immunization drives and prompt medical intervention.
