With the countdown to the 13th National Parliamentary Election entering its final stage, a joint opinion poll by the Center for Social Insight (CSI) and London-based Weekly Surma has revealed a significant lead for the BNP-led alliance. The survey results, released at a press conference in Banani on Wednesday, show the BNP alliance holding 46.60% of public support, while the Jamaat-e-Islami-led coalition follows with 32.56%.
The survey, based on direct feedback from approximately 65,000 voters and a database of over one million data points, suggests an unprecedented level of voter enthusiasm. Nearly 81% of eligible voters expressed a keen interest in participating in the February 12 polls.
Data analysts at the briefing projected that the BNP-led alliance is currently on track to secure between 171 and 222 seats, placing them in a strong position to form the next government. On the other hand, the Jamaat-led coalition is expected to witness its strongest electoral performance in history.
However, the report highlighted that the final outcome could hinge on 86 “swing seats” where a neck-and-neck contest is expected. These constituencies remain highly competitive and could ultimately determine the majority in the 13th Parliament.
A striking feature of this election cycle is the public’s confidence in the electoral environment. According to the poll, 92% of voters believe the administration is maintaining a neutral stance, and a majority feel that a “level playing field” has finally been established. The fear and intimidation that historically clouded Bangladeshi elections appear to have diminished significantly.
“From professionals to rural laborers, people are eager to exercise their right to vote,” noted a CSI representative during the briefing.
Despite the positive outlook on the voting process, the survey noted a lingering sense of uncertainty regarding post-election stability. While the “fear factor” has decreased during the campaign period, many citizens expressed concerns about potential unrest or political shifts following the announcement of the results.
The 13th National Election, scheduled for February 12, is being viewed as a historic moment for the nation’s democratic transition, with this scientific survey providing a potential roadmap of the upcoming results.
