The Republic of Korea has handed over a fresh contribution of 15,000 metric tonnes of rice to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to support life-saving food assistance for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.
The official handover ceremony took place on Sunday at WFP’s Sagorika Warehouse in Chattogram, attended by officials from the Government of Bangladesh, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, and WFP representatives.
Provided through Korea’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA), the shipment includes 150 metric tonnes of fortified rice kernels loaded with essential vitamins and minerals. Once blended with standard rice grains, this shipment will significantly enhance nutrition levels among vulnerable refugee children and women in Cox’s Bazar.
ABM Shafiqul Haidar, Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, expressed gratitude to Seoul, emphasizing that this sustained solidarity reflects enduring international cooperation in tackling protracted displacement crises.
Korean Ambassador to Bangladesh Kim Ji-joon affirmed Seoul’s commitment to supporting both food security and nutrition outcomes. He noted that South Korea will maintain close collaboration with Dhaka and WFP during this challenging period.
WFP Country Director Coco Ushiyama highlighted that the donation comes at a critical juncture as humanitarian funding faces severe global constraints. Nearly 1.2 million refugees remain totally dependent on aid as the crisis enters its tenth year. Korea previously provided 15,000 metric tonnes of rice in 2024 and 20,265 metric tonnes in 2025.
