Direct Russian drone strike hits Ukraine’s intelligence HQ in Kyiv

A Russian jet-powered drone launched a direct daylight strike on the Kyiv headquarters of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), marking a unprecedented hit on a top-tier government installation in the heart of the capital since the full-scale conflict began four and a half years ago. The rare, bold attack vividly highlights Ukraine’s worsening vulnerability and severe lack of adequate air defense capabilities.

The attack unfolded during daytime hours on Friday (September 4, 2026), leaving smoke billowing from the heavily damaged security building. Emergency responders quickly rushed to the scene to extinguish the flames, while local officials confirmed that at least 12 people sustained injuries during the strike.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that the drone directly targeted the office of SBU chief Oleksandr Poklad inside the facility. However, official SBU statements later confirmed that Poklad remained unharmed and was in a secure location. Zelensky subsequently instructed the military to support Poklad in executing a swift and equivalent counter-strike against Russian targets.

Russian forces have sustained an intense eight-day aerial campaign over Kyiv. Strikes hit multiple structures in the city center alongside suburban logistics hubs and manufacturing facilities, including a prominent Coca-Cola bottling plant on the capital’s outskirts. This virtually relentless wave of bombardments since last month has killed at least 53 people and injured 134 across the Kyiv region.

Military analysts attribute the recent penetration of air defenses to Russia’s deployment of high-speed, jet-engine drones reaching velocities up to 500 kilometers per hour. Mobile anti-drone units struggle to track and intercept such fast-moving targets, leaving ground-to-air interceptor missiles and fighter jets as the only viable defense—two assets currently in critically short supply across Ukraine.

The high-profile strike coincides with an upcoming diplomatic mission by US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Moscow and Kyiv. Condemning the act, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that Russia launched this aggressive attack right amid renewed peace efforts, clearly demonstrating its disregard for diplomatic solutions.
