Bangladesh post office transports 400 tonnes of heavy goods in two months via upgraded speed post

The Bangladesh Post Office has expanded its operational scope beyond conventional letters to deliver heavy commercial and household goods—including refrigerators, motorcycles, air conditioners, and furniture—transporting nearly 400 tonnes of cargo over the past two months through its modernized Speed Post service.

The initiative charges a base rate of BDT 10 for the first kilogram and BDT 5 for each additional kilogram, making logistics affordable for rural communities and small-scale entrepreneurs.

Director General of the Directorate of Posts Kazi Asadul Islam confirmed the milestone during an interview with BSS on Saturday, September 5, 2026.

Under the revised operational guidelines, post offices are mandated to prepare goods for delivery within 24 hours from district headquarters to Dhaka, 48 hours between different districts, and 96 hours for remote regions. To protect public safety, the postal service maintains a strict ban on hazardous chemicals, explosives, narcotics, firearms, live animals, and compressed gas cylinders.

The upgraded logistics framework aligns with the government’s 180-day priority action plan, structured alongside election pledges. The postal service gained widespread public trust after successfully handling trackable postal ballots for over 1.53 million overseas voters during the 13th National Parliamentary Election.

Looking ahead, the department has deployed 50 eco-friendly electric bikes and is restructuring its distribution network into three synchronized hubs across Tejgaon, Kamlapur, and the Dhaka GPO campus. Future expansion plans include launching a comprehensive inter-district home-shifting service for household relocations.
