A prominent Iranian cleric warned on Friday that Tehran could shift its long-standing nuclear doctrine and pursue atomic weapons if foreign adversaries target the country’s key infrastructure.
Mohammad Nabi Mousavifard, the Friday prayer leader in the southwestern city of Ahvaz, delivered the stark warning during his sermon. His remarks marked a significant escalation in Tehran’s military posture, shifting the focus beyond its established arsenal of long-range missiles and drones.
Mousavifard cautioned that any attempt to launch an “infrastructure war” against Iran would force a drastic strategic shift. He emphasized that decisions regarding Iran’s nuclear capabilities remain solely within the nation’s domestic jurisdiction, signaling that persistent Western pressure could push Tehran toward an uncompromising defense posture.
Directly addressing Washington, the cleric stated that all US military bases and strategic assets in the Middle East would become direct targets for Iranian drones and precision missiles if regional hostilities expand. He claimed American forces are already entangled in a geopolitical trap in the region from which they cannot easily extract themselves.
Reinforcing the aggressive stance, Mohammad Mokhber, a senior adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, issued a separate statement warning that current tensions would escalate into an “offensive war phase” unless Iran’s policy demands are fully met.
Military analysts note that Tehran is deploying a dual strategy: asserting sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz while using the threat of nuclear escalation to deter foreign strikes. This sudden shift introduces an unpredictable dynamic to an already volatile Middle East crisis.
