Preparatory meeting held at parliament for Bangladesh presidential election 2026

A high-level preparatory meeting was convened at the Cabinet Room of the Jatiya Sangsad on Tuesday to review administrative arrangements for the upcoming 2026 presidential election, scheduled for August 20. Acting Speaker Barrister Kaisar Kamal, MP, presided over the session.

The meeting focused on facilitating seamless logistical support, ensuring full participation of Members of Parliament, and approving security protocols within the parliament premises.

Addressing the session, acting speaker Barrister Kaisar Kamal emphasized that freeing the state apparatus from authoritarian remnants remains the central priority. He noted that conducting a transparent presidential election in 2026 marks a crucial milestone in reinstating democratic integrity across public institutions.

Participants finalized and confirmed the official minutes regarding the designation of the main Parliament Chamber as the polling venue, alongside arranging secure balloting and technical support.

According to the official schedule issued by the Election Commission of Bangladesh, voting will take place inside the Parliament Chamber on Thursday, August 20, 2026. Pursuant to Section 3 of the Presidential Election Act, 1991, the Chief Election Commissioner will conduct the election.

Chief Whip Md. Nurul Islam, MP, Opposition Chief Whip Md. Nahid Islam, MP, alongside government and opposition whips attended the session. Senior officials, including Parliament Secretariat Secretary Barrister Md. Golam Sarwar Bhuiyan and Election Commission Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed, were also present.
