Admiral Steve Koehler, Commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, concluded a three-day official visit to Bangladesh on August 6, aimed at advancing bilateral defense ties and enhancing maritime security cooperation in the Bay of Bengal.
During his visit from August 4 to 6, Admiral Koehler held high-level discussions with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Defense Advisor AKM Shamsul Islam, and Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Khondkar Misbah ul Azim. The meetings focused on regional maritime stability, joint defense initiatives, and strategic coordination across the Indo-Pacific.
Deliberations centered on ensuring free and open sea lanes, strengthening intelligence sharing, and addressing maritime domain awareness in the Indian Ocean region. Naval cooperation and capacity-building measures featured prominently during the discussions with the Bangladesh Armed Forces leadership.
Beyond official security dialogues, Admiral Koehler paid tribute to Bangladesh’s independence history. He laid a floral wreath at Shikha Anirban in Dhaka Cantonment to honor the martyred members of the Bangladesh Armed Forces who sacrificed their lives during the 1971 Liberation War.
The Pacific Fleet commander also toured Lalbagh Fort, one of Bangladesh’s premier national heritage sites in Old Dhaka, praising the country’s rich historical architecture.
Speaking on the visit, U.S. Embassy Acting Spokesperson Mara Bird noted that Admiral Koehler’s engagements further solidified the enduring defense partnership between the United States and Bangladesh while supporting shared security objectives in the region.
