In light of evolving global geopolitics, migration management has transcended economic boundaries to become a core pillar of internal stability and national security, stated Dr. A K M Shamsul Islam, Defense Advisor to the Prime Minister.
Delivering the keynote address at a seminar titled “Migration Governance as a National Security Instrument in Bangladesh” at Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) in Mirpur Cantonment on Thursday, the advisor highlighted the changing dynamics of global mobility and state sovereignty. Upon his arrival, he was received by BUP Vice-Chancellor Major General Md Mahbub-ul Alam.
Dr. Islam emphasized that national security is no longer restricted to physical border defense. Ensuring orderly mobility, upholding the dignity of migrant workers, and curtailing irregular migration channels directly influence regional stability and law enforcement capabilities.
Highlighting the economic weight of remittances, he called for structured skilled-labor development and robust institutional synergy to combat human trafficking and fraudulent recruiter networks. He stressed that migrant workers are key custodians of Bangladesh’s international image, requiring stronger state mechanisms for emergency assistance abroad.
The presentation was followed by an interactive Q&A session where BUP students raised critical queries regarding border management, human trafficking, and regional geopolitics. Concluding his visit, the Defense Advisor commended BUP’s academic rigor and research contributions toward policy-level discourse.
